Title: My Life as a Cartoonist
Author: Janet Tashjian
Derek is back in a third novel by Janet Tashjian. Derek continues to struggle with reading but has found his niche with cartooning. He loves to draw and write cartoons. His love, however, finds him in a tricky situation with Umberto. When the two boys are put together in detention, they must figure out how to get along to create a cartoon. Derek finds friendship in the most unexpected place in this story.
These novels appeal to students because they look similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. However, I enjoy these much more because these have a plot and require thinking from the reader. This book, and My Life as a Book and My Life as a Stuntboy, are great alternatives to Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
